Fort Charlotte

Historic Fort Charlotte is an eight-minute drive and 30-minute walk from The Port. Fort Charlotte, the largest of the Nassau Forts, sits on 100 acres on a hill overlooking the western end of Nassau Harbor. Fort Charlotte was named after Queen Saharia Charlotte, wife of King George III, and was built in 1788 by Lord Dunmore. The Fort boasts dungeons, a (now dry) moat, a wooden bridge, underground passageways and 42 cannons. It is alleged that Fort Charlotte’s defense system seemed so impenetrable to would-be invaders, that the cannons were never actually fired in battle. Fort Charlotte provides commanding and picturesque views of Nassau Harbor and is a beautiful sight to behold.
