Nassau Public Library & Museum

On the very southern end of Parliament Square and Shirley Street, a four-minute drive and five-minute walk from The Port is The Nassau Public Library & Museum. This octagonal-shaped building was originally constructed as a jail in 1797. The Nassau Public Library was converted in 1879 to a library, reading room and museum. Prison cells which once housed prisoners now store books, charts, historical Arawak artifacts, prints, newspapers and colonial documents.
